Colleague In Red Stripy Top

We encourage team members to always do the right thing for our Society members, for colleagues and for our communities. This also includes valuing diversity and inclusion and providing an environment where it is safe to speak up. We also seek and act on feedback from our teams on our culture, including through our annual engagement survey, our colleague council and employee representation groups.

Diversity and inclusion

We are committed to an inclusive culture, where people feel they belong and are valued and our team members are representative of the communities we serve. We have a number of key commitments, policies and actions to create a diverse and inclusive culture:

  • A diversity and inclusion policy that demonstrates our commitment and documents the processes we will follow throughout the employee life cycle.
  • We have been signatory to the Women in Finance Charter since its inception in 2016.
  • We conduct an employee survey annually that includes questions on our culture and diversity highlighting opportunities to evolve our diversity agenda.
  • There is an active Colleague Council that meets quarterly and employee representation groups  focused around different areas of diversity.
  • Our hybrid and flexible working policy is accessible to all employees and we offer our support to people managers and employees who require flexible working.

Training and development

Developing your career prospects does not necessarily have to mean moving up the ladder or staying still. Career development is about owning and growing your potential, playing to your strengths, getting exposure to new skills and trying out new things if you decide they’re right for you.

There are many opportunities and routes you can take to help develop your career if you’d like to. From apprenticeships and professional development, our in house training academy, courses to top tips and guidance on having meaningful conversations about your career. Ultimately it’s your career, you're in the driving seat and we’re here to support you on your journey. Find out how we support you below.

Onboarding and induction

Our aim at Nottingham Building Society is to set all new starters up for success and future growth through our onboarding and induction programme. Alongside a variety of tools and resources available to you to support your onboarding journey, you’ll also be joined by other new starters from across the Society at one of our centrally delivered induction workshops. This is further supported by localised training specific to your role and function.

Apprenticeships

We’re passionate about growing our talent pool through professional apprenticeships and helping our people meet their career goals with programmes that are tailored to their development needs. We are proud to be supporting a number of employees currently working through apprenticeship programmes. Apprentices complete their professional qualification by applying their skills in the workplace. They have an opportunity to spend time with different functions within the organisation to broaden their knowledge and skills.

Coaching and mentoring

People leaders can use coaching skills in order to help their team members identify their goals and the resources necessary in order to achieve them. Our Talent and Development team can also offer bespoke coaching interventions in particular circumstances. Mentoring is development driven. Its purpose is to develop you, not only for the current job, but also for the future. This distinction differentiates the role of your immediate manager and that of the mentor.

Seek the big insight

We encourage people to develop by experiencing life in different departments across the business. By gaining exposure to the various teams and functions society wide, it helps to understand the context of the environments in which they work. Working together with stakeholders across the organisation, we encourage collegues to spend time across different areas to understand how they operate.

Leadership training

Regardless of level, we are committed to supporting, challenging and nurturing our different populations of leaders and aspiring leaders. There are a wide variety of routes we can use to create a varied and supportive learning experience - on the job, workshops, coaching and mentoring or formal training.

Professional qualifications

As part of this commitment, we are pleased to support team members who have a desire to pursue certain professional qualifications. The objective of the professional qualifications policy is to ensure consistency and fairness in the process. If your current role or progression opportunity requires you to hold a professional qualification, it is possible that we can support you to achieve this.
